How To Humidify Your Cigars

A good cigar depends on proper storage. This guide explains cigar humidification, how to season a humidor, how to calibrate your hygrometer, and how to use Joe Cool Cigar humidification products to help maintain a steady humidor environment.

1

Season

Prepare the wood inside your humidor before adding cigars.

2

Stabilize

Allow the humidity to settle before loading your humidor.

3

Maintain

Use humidor solution or gel humidifiers to help support steady humidity.

Cigar Humidification Basics

Cigars are natural tobacco products, and they need the right environment to stay in good condition. If a humidor is too dry, cigars can become brittle, burn hot, crack, or lose flavor. If a humidor is too wet, cigars may become soft, burn poorly, or develop mold.

Many cigar owners aim for a humidity range around 67%–70% relative humidity. Some prefer slightly lower or higher depending on their cigars, climate, and personal preference.

The goal is balance

A humidor does not need constant adjustments. The goal is to create a stable environment and avoid big humidity swings. A properly seasoned humidor, a reliable humidification product, and a good hygrometer make cigar storage much easier.

Tip: Always use a reliable digital hygrometer. Built-in analog hygrometers can be inaccurate unless properly calibrated.

How To Season a Humidor

New wood humidors need to be seasoned before storing cigars. The cedar inside a new humidor is often dry. If cigars are placed inside too soon, the dry wood can pull moisture out of the cigars.

Step 1: Remove everything from the humidor

Take out trays, dividers, and packaging. Make sure the inside of the humidor is clean and free of dust.

Step 2: Place a clean moisture source inside

Use a clean seasoning pack, distilled water source, or a small dish/sponge system designed for humidor seasoning. Do not soak the wood. The goal is to slowly raise the moisture level inside the humidor.

Step 3: Close the humidor and let it rest

Close the lid and allow the humidor to sit for several days. During this time, the interior wood absorbs moisture and begins to stabilize.

Step 4: Check the humidity

Use a digital hygrometer to monitor the humidity. Once the humidor holds near your target range without dropping quickly, it is ready for cigars.

Step 5: Add cigars slowly

Add cigars after the humidor is stable. Avoid overfilling a freshly seasoned humidor right away. Give the cigars and the humidor time to balance together.

Important: Do not wipe the inside of your humidor with too much water. Over-wetting the wood can cause swelling, warping, or uneven humidity.

How To Use and Calibrate a Digital Hygrometer

A hygrometer tells you the humidity level inside your humidor. This is one of the most important tools in cigar storage because it tells you whether your humidor is too dry, too wet, or properly balanced.

For best results, we strongly recommend using a digital hygrometer instead of relying on the analog dial that comes built into many humidors. Analog hygrometers can look classic, but they are often inaccurate, slow to respond, or not calibrated correctly.

Why calibration matters

A hygrometer must be calibrated because even a good digital hygrometer can be off by several percentage points. If your hygrometer is reading wrong, you may think your humidor or humidification product is not working, when the real issue is the reading itself.

Many humidity troubleshooting problems come from using an analog hygrometer or an uncalibrated hygrometer. Before adding more solution, changing products, or assuming something is wrong with your humidor, always confirm that your hygrometer is accurate.

Important: If your hygrometer is not calibrated, you are guessing. A wrong reading can cause you to over-humidify or under-humidify your cigars.

How to calibrate a digital hygrometer

  1. Use a hygrometer calibration kit or a sealed calibration bag designed for humidor hygrometers.
  2. Place the hygrometer inside the sealed calibration bag or container.
  3. Leave it sealed for the full recommended calibration time, usually 12 to 24 hours depending on the kit.
  4. Check the reading without opening the bag or container.
  5. If the calibration kit is designed to hold 75% humidity and your hygrometer reads 72%, your hygrometer is reading 3% low.
  6. If your hygrometer has an adjustment button, adjust it to the correct reading.
  7. If your hygrometer does not allow adjustment, write down the difference and mentally add or subtract that number when reading your humidor.

Example

If your calibration test should read 75% but your digital hygrometer reads 72%, your hygrometer is 3 points low. That means when your humidor reads 67%, the actual humidity may be closer to 70%.

Where to place the hygrometer

Place the hygrometer inside the humidor near the cigars, not directly touching the humidifier or sitting against wet material. Give the humidor time to stabilize before reacting to every small change.

Digital vs. analog hygrometers

  • Digital hygrometers are generally easier to read.
  • Digital hygrometers usually respond faster to humidity changes.
  • Analog hygrometers often need adjustment and can be inaccurate.
  • A calibrated digital hygrometer gives you a more reliable reading when troubleshooting humidity issues.

Before contacting support about low or high humidity, calibrate your hygrometer first. This solves many common humidor humidity concerns.

How To Use Joe Cool Cigar PG Humidor Solution

Joe Cool Cigar Propylene Glycol Humidor Solution is designed for refillable cigar humidifiers. It helps support a stable humidity environment for cigar storage.

Best used with

  • Refillable foam humidifiers
  • Refillable crystal humidifiers
  • Humidor humidification devices designed for liquid solution

Instructions

  1. Remove the humidifier from your humidor.
  2. Slowly add Joe Cool Cigar PG Humidor Solution to the humidifier.
  3. Allow the humidifier to absorb the solution.
  4. Wipe away any excess liquid from the outside of the humidifier.
  5. Place the humidifier back inside the humidor.
  6. Close the humidor and allow the humidity to stabilize.

How often should you refill?

Refill timing depends on the size of your humidor, how often it is opened, the number of cigars inside, and your local climate. Check your hygrometer regularly and refill when humidity begins to drop below your preferred range.

Do not pour solution directly onto cigars or onto the wood inside the humidor. Add solution only to the humidification device.

How To Use Joe Cool Cigar Crystal Gel Humidifier

Joe Cool Cigar Crystal Gel Humidifiers are designed to help regulate humidity inside a humidor. The gel crystals absorb moisture and slowly release it back into the humidor environment.

Instructions

  1. Open the crystal gel humidifier.
  2. If the crystals appear dry or shrunken, refill with the recommended Joe Cool Cigar humidor solution.
  3. Allow the crystals to absorb the solution.
  4. Do not overfill. Leave room for the crystals to expand.
  5. Wipe the outside of the jar clean.
  6. Place the jar inside the humidor with the cap removed and the vented top secured to the jar as designed.
  7. Close the humidor and monitor humidity with a hygrometer.

When to refill the gel

Refill when the gel crystals begin to shrink, dry out, or when the humidor humidity starts dropping below your preferred range. Refill slowly and avoid flooding the jar.

Tip: If your humidor is very dry, season the humidor first. A gel humidifier is for maintaining humidity; it should not be used as a shortcut for properly seasoning dry wood.

Troubleshooting Humidity Problems

Humidity is too low

  • Your humidor may not be fully seasoned.
  • Your humidifier may need to be refilled.
  • Your hygrometer may not be calibrated.
  • You may be using an inaccurate analog hygrometer.
  • The seal on the humidor may not be tight.
  • The humidor may be opened too often.
  • Your room environment may be very dry.

Humidity is too high

  • The humidifier may be overfilled.
  • The humidor may be over-humidified for its size.
  • Your hygrometer may not be calibrated.
  • Your hygrometer may be placed too close to the humidifier.
  • There may be too much moisture inside the box.

Cigars feel too dry

Raise humidity slowly. Do not try to rapidly rehydrate dry cigars. Sudden moisture changes can damage wrappers. Allow cigars to recover gradually in a stable humidor.

Cigars feel too soft

Allow the humidor to breathe briefly and check whether the humidifier is overfilled. Monitor with a calibrated digital hygrometer before making large adjustments.

Quick Maintenance Tips

  • Use a digital hygrometer for better accuracy.
  • Calibrate your hygrometer before trusting the reading.
  • Keep your humidor away from direct sunlight and heat.
  • Do not place cigars directly against wet humidification material.
  • Refill humidifiers slowly and wipe off excess solution.
  • Give humidity changes time to stabilize before making more adjustments.
  • Check your humidor weekly, especially during seasonal weather changes.
